In China, for example, Psyduck enjoys tremendous popularity compared to elsewhere. In terms of merchandise, the Chinese people are extremely fond of Pokémon luxury fountain pens, electric hand warmers and portable blenders. The country’s demand is especially strong in the “3Cs” – computers, communications, and consumer electronics; and Pokémon’s wireless earbuds have generated huge excitement, with initial stocks selling out in mere seconds after their release.

A commercial for the Pokémon TCG released in Taiwan features popular actor Chris (Kang Ren) Wu, who is perhaps best known for his role in the Taiwanese drama “The World Between Us. ” Pokémon selected him as the ideal local spokesperson to convey the enjoyment of the Pokémon TCG to people of all ages. The commercial asks the question, “Have you become the adult you wanted to become?” In the commercial, we see Chris opening the product package, and the card he selects is the Pokémon he liked most as a child. But just which card is Chris holding in his hand? Viewers of the commercial are invited to take their guess. This is but one example of how Pokémon thoughtfully selects actors and undertakes marketing promotions unique to each region.
