Eighteen Music Treasures from Pokémon and Hatsune Miku

1. Sharing the Pokémon “Sound”

Who among us has not experienced the mysterious power of music to bring a rush of nostalgia, stop us in our tracks, or lift our spirits?

From classic theme songs and video game soundtracks to a catchy melody heard on the street, music has the amazing power to leave a lasting impression on our lives.

Pokémon has also created a treasure trove of music through the years. We launched the "Pokémon Music Spotlight" project to celebrate these sounds as a new entry point, inviting fans to enjoy the world of Pokémon even more.

2. Pokémon x Hatsune Miku x Creators

As part of this project, we partnered with Crypton Future Media, INC., to make Pokémon music available to a wider audience with their virtual singer Hatsune Miku.

Since her debut in 2007, Hatsune Miku has shared things in common with Pokémon: both began as software and share a foundation in electronic sound. We believed these shared origins made her a perfect partner for this project.

This project has been developed mainly on YouTube.

We teamed up with a group of highly distinctive artists to launch “Pokémon feat. Hatsune Miku Project VOLTAGE 18 Types/Songs.” This project features Hatsune Miku performing original tracks that incorporate background music and sound effects from the Pokémon Video Game Series.

3.  The Significance of the Number Eighteen

We chose the number 18, which is the total number of Pokémon types ( including Grass, Fire,  Water, etc.), as the central theme to celebrate the diversity of Pokémon, Hatsune Miku, and the artists involved in the project.

To fully express these 18 distinct individualities, we created 18 different character designs and illustrations, followed by 18 songs and music videos.

We kicked off the project by revealing illustrations of designs of Hatsune Miku as a Trainer for each of the 18 different Pokémon types, accompanied by illustrations of 18 Buddy Pokémon.

To pursue the “Trainer-ness”, the selected illustrators were those who have been drawing the Pokémon Trainers.

Following the 18 designs and illustrations, we began a staggered release of 18 songs and music videos. The participating creators all share a deep history with Pokémon, having engaged with the franchise through our video games, the Trading Card Game, or anime. Reflecting on the collaboration, a project member noted, “The creators’ love for Pokémon and their passion for their music far exceeded our expectations.”

4. Production that Raises the Intensity of a Work

To maximize each creator’s unique style and talents, the project team immersed itself in every lyric, demo, and music video. They maintained close contact with the artists to ensure the final products met the high quality as expected and appreciated by both Pokémon and Hatsune Miku fans.

A project member shared, “In this environment where the joy of creating drives everything, we constantly consider how best to blend the essence of Pokémon, Hatsune Miku, and the participating creators to reach 300% quality.”

Our team managed every aspect of the collaboration between Pokémon, Hatsune Miku, and the creators. This included things like checking the actual in-game sounds as well as suggesting specific Pokémon and audio samples that would best fit each track.

Ultimately, these 18 designs, illustrations, songs, and music videos represent the cumulative contributions of the Hatsune Miku creative community, the tireless drive of the artists, and a shared love for Pokémon.

These works continue to reach fans far and wide over YouTube and X, connecting the Pokémon and Hatsune Miku communities and enchanting new fans along the way.
