Authentic Pokémon battles made easy for everyone

Bringing the 30-Year Legacy of Pokémon Battles to a Wider Audience

In April 2026, we launched Pokémon Champions, a standalone game dedicated entirely to Pokémon battles.

Pokémon battles fundamentally involve players building a team from their collected Pokémon and issuing commands turn by turn, such as executing moves or swapping in a different Pokémon, to outmaneuver their opponents. As a staple of Pokémon games, these battles demand sharp foresight, resulting in a turn-based battle of wits that unfolds through a series of offensive and defensive moves.

Online PvP (Player vs. Player) matches in particular stand out as a major lure for the many fans around the world who enjoy the competition.

As the game’s director explains, the appeal comes from the diversity of the Pokémon and the battle of wits between opponents:

“It’s all about building a team to your exact specifications from countless combinations, and pitting your tactics against your opponent’s. I believe PvP battles offer a unique thrill that you can’t get anywhere else. We developed Pokémon Champions to preserve that experience for generations to come.”

Each Pokémon brings unique strengths and roles to a team, and different combinations of them open up endless possibilities in Pokémon battles. Pokémon Champions was created to preserve this exciting complexity and take it even further.

Lowering Difficulty Barriers and Widening the Gateway for New Players

For years, competitive Pokémon battles have faced a major hurdle: A steep barrier of entry for PvP battles that led many to view it as something reserved for veteran players.

One part of this challenge stemmed from the difficulty of training Pokémon to be strong enough for battle. Traditionally in the Pokémon series, players often spend significant time meticulously training their Pokémon and building up their stats.

To address this in Pokémon Champions, we’ve drastically simplified these mechanics. We have introduced the Scout feature, which allows players to select recommended Pokémon to build a battle-ready team.

Pokémon who join the team through the Scout feature are already fully leveled, so players can jump right into battles without training them. Even those who haven’t played a Pokémon series game before are able to join battles right away.

Producer notes the intention behind this feature:

“When I, myself, played in PvP battles, I invested a lot of time training and carefully selecting the Pokémon for my team. By shortening the time needed to put together a team in this game, we hope players can focus their energy on experimenting with different battle strategies.”

The difficulty of training Pokémon isn’t the only obstacle that beginners face before joining PvP battles. Memorizing things like move effects and type matchups presented another hurdle. To improve accessibility, we have implemented real-time matchup guides and move effect data that display in clear, numerical values during battles

We also prioritized the pacing of the matches. We designed the battles around a five-minute target so players can easily pick up and play even during short breaks. The faster pace does not mean a reduction in visual excitement, however. We fine-tuned the presentation to make the battle effects more compact while maintaining the visual depth.

Joining the Battle alongside Your Cherished Pokémon

One of the main highlights of this title is its connection to the past adventures in the series. Through the cloud service Pokémon Home, players can bring their cherished Pokémon from past titles in the series into Pokémon Champions.

One staff member highlights this connection:

“Until now, most players built teams exclusively around powerful Pokémon they have carefully selected and trained. But with Pokémon Champions, players can now bring their most memorable Pokémon into PvP battles, whether it was one received at a Pokémon Center event or the very first one they ever caught.”

The memories players have from playing games throughout the series are not limited to a single game. The Pokémon carry them as they are transferred, expanding the world of Pokémon.

A Wave of First-Time Pokémon Battle Competitors

The post-release response has exceeded the expectations of the developers, with a particularly high number of players in their teens and early twenties experiencing competitive Pokémon battles for the first time. The base game is free to play, so it has also served as an entry point for people who have never tried PvP to give it a chance.

That popularity can also be seen in the excitement surrounding tournaments featuring the title. At the Pokémon Japan Championships 2026*, the official tournament held shortly after release, the game category featuring Pokémon Champions attracted tremendous excitement, including an increase in archive stream views of approximately 1.5 times that of the previous year.

In August 2026, the Pokémon World Championships 2026 will be held in the United States, where players will compete in the first-ever tournament to determine “The World’s Best Pokémon Champions Player!”

It’s a battle showcase where anyone can participate alongside their favorite Pokémon. And by widening the gateway to Pokémon battles, a tradition that has continued for 30 years, this legacy will be passed on to the next generation.
