Let the Music Play: There’s More to Game Music Than Just Games

1. The Game Music Etched in the Ears and Hearts of Players

Music plays a vital role in shaping the gaming experience. When you power on the console, battle a powerful rival, or encounter a Pokémon you’ve never seen before, the sound shifts to match the moment. These acoustic changes influence players’ emotions in a multitude of ways.

Approximately 25 years have passed since the release of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green (known as Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue outside of Japan). Ever since, the melodies of the adventures have remained engraved in the hearts of players, deepening with every journey taken alongside their Pokémon .

Countless fans adore game music of Pokémon, and our production team pours immense passion into its creation.
However, players have had surprisingly few opportunities to access these tracks outside of gameplay.

Recognizing this gap, one employee believed we should offer more ways to enjoy Pokémon through music.  Driven by that vision, we launched the internal project “Pokémon Music Spotlight” in early 2021 to create a future where the world teems with Pokémon music.

Since then, like-minded project members have continuously debated and refined the infinite possibilities of the Pokémon music library.

2. Enhancing Nostalgic BGM for the Modern Era

As a first step, their discussions led to the creation of the “Pokémon DP Sound Library*,” a service that allowed users to enjoy 149 BGM and sound effects from Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl for free.
*The Pokémon DP Sound Library service ended in May 2022.

With this project, we moved beyond simple in-game listening. Users could listen online and even download musical scores and audio data. This freedom inspired a wave of secondary creation, allowing individual fans to use game music in their own unique ways.

Simultaneously, the team also explored ways to reach music fans through subscriptions, expanding beyond game soundtracks. These efforts culminated in two new tracks: “Reconnect” and “Grown.”

To bring them to life, we enlisted the help of Yaffle, a remarkably talented young composer, arranger and music producer.

Since Yaffle played Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green as a child, we made only one request: “Use the game sounds to create the coolest music you can imagine.

Yaffle rose to the challenge. The resulting songs are bursting with playfulness, generously sampling BGM, sound effects, and keywords instantly recognizable to Pokémon fans.

3. Game Music as a Gateway to the World of Pokémon

Once released, the music resonated not only with Pokémon fans but also with music listeners in Japan and abroad. The tracks even made it to radio charts, serving as a gateway for people of all walks of life to encounter the world of Pokémon.

The evolutionary journey that began with the 8-bit sound is still unfolding. As technology advances and eras change, so does our sound. Cherishing this musical legacy, the “Pokémon Music Spotlight” project will continue connecting players through the power of sound.
